- Import the sound file you want to use as a ringtone into iTunes. I'm not going to cover sound file editing in this post.
- Right click on the newly imported sound file and choose "Create AAC version".
- Once iTunes finishes the conversion, you will notice you have 2 files of the same name listed. Right click on the newly created AAC version (we will call it George for reference) and choose "Show in Windows Explorer".
- Change the extension of George from .m4a to .m4r. If you cannot see George's file extension, go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types)
- In iTunes DELETE the George from the library. Keep in mind the version of George listed in the library was the .m4a version. We have updated George to .m4r.
- Now re-add George to your iTunes library. He will be listed in your ringtones.
- Sync your iPhone and enjoy.

Create iPhone ringtones
This has been covered by so many people and a big thanks goes out to Art of the iPhone for the walk-through. I'm simply going to give the high-level overview. This overview assumes you are using Windows.
