Create iPhone ringtones

This has been covered by so many people and a big thanks goes out to Art of the iPhone for the walk-through. I'm simply going to give the high-level overview. This overview assumes you are using Windows.

  1. Import the sound file you want to use as a ringtone into iTunes. I'm not going to cover sound file editing in this post.
  2. Right click on the newly imported sound file and choose "Create AAC version".
  3. Once iTunes finishes the conversion, you will notice you have 2 files of the same name listed. Right click on the newly created AAC version (we will call it George for reference) and choose "Show in Windows Explorer".
  4. Change the extension of George from .m4a to .m4r. If you cannot see George's file extension, go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types)
  5. In iTunes DELETE the George from the library. Keep in mind the version of George listed in the library was the .m4a version. We have updated George to .m4r.
  6. Now re-add George to your iTunes library. He will be listed in your ringtones.
  7. Sync your iPhone and enjoy.
