Problem
When taking a screenshot of movie playback in Windows media player, the movie screen is black.
Background
I had to write a set of instructions on a custom configuration of Vista. To save time, I recorded myself configuring Vista within VMWare Workstation. The final movie saved as an .AVI. Because I couldn't install another video player (such as VLC Player), I had to use Windows media player.
My plan was playback the movie, pause the playback and take screenshots. However, the movie playback shot within Windows media player was black.
Fix
1. Open Windows Media Player.
2. Select "Tools" >> "Options"
3. Select the "Performance" tab
4. Click "Advanced" button
5. Remove the checkmark next to "Use Overlays".
6. Click "OK".
Note: An alternative to the above fix is to lower hardware acceleration down to "None". However, this may impact playback performance.
