Vista: Log in to a domain machine with local account on Vista

Problem
You cannot log in to a domain-joined Vista machine with a valid local user account.

After joining a Vista machine to a domain, you can only log in to the machine with a local account by preceding the account name with the local machine name and a backslash (MachineName\LocalUserName). However, the machine is not listed anywhere on the login screen.

Note: This is a change in Windows Vista. Windows XP listed the domain(s) as well as the local machine name in a drop box.

Solution
Precede the local user account with a ".\" (.\LocalUserName). The "." basically means "this computer".
